Doctor of Philosophy in Communication

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Communication is research-intensive and trains students in one of two orientations: Communication and Media Sciences or Humanities and Critical/Cultural Studies. Program requirements aim to prepare students who plan careers in academia or other research-oriented professions.

To earn a PhD in the Department of Communication and Journalism, students must devise an individualized program of study in consultation with their advisor and demonstrate competency in a specialized area of study, as well as gain a comprehensive background in at least one subfield of communication and/or media studies.
