Doctor of Philosophy in Geology

This program develops expert geologists through rigorous research and training, equipping them with advanced skills in data analysis, modeling, and communication for leadership roles in multiple geoscience applications.

Work leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geology prepares candidates with comprehensive proficiency in their professional field and rigorous training in methods of research. The final basis for granting the degree is the candidate’s grasp of the subject matter in a broad field of study and a demonstrated ability to carry out and communicate independent research. In addition, the candidate must have acquired the ability to express thoughts clearly and convincingly in both oral and written communications. The degree is not granted solely for the completion of coursework, residence, and technical requirements, although these must be met.

Graduates of the PhD program acquire diverse skills that allow them to competently explain the scope, significance, and limitations of geological information to stakeholders in land and environment stewardship and civil infrastructure. They conceive new methods to evaluate risks and vulnerabilities from geological hazards, make detailed evaluations of quality and quantity of Earth resources, and evaluate geological data on targets of interest for resource extraction decisions. 

The program prepares graduates to design and execute field studies to solve geological problems or close previous gaps in knowledge, create robust and reliable inferences of fundamental Earth structures and processes from incomplete and possibly inaccurate geological information, and combine geological and geophysical data to build and assess the implications of integrative models. Communications skills include the ability to deliver oral presentations and answer technical questions in plain language, in which geological information is motivated, described, interpreted and leads to compelling conclusions carefully explained to the audience. Graduates will prepare and circulate well-written and well-structured documents that contain sound reasoning and robust conclusions based on geological principles. 

Distinguishing elements of the PhD program include proficiency in the capabilities of commercial software packages and participation in their development and refinement, the use of advanced geological field and laboratory equipment, and the application of robust and decisive tests of geological research hypotheses using advanced principles, data, and techniques. In addition, graduates will be role models in professional and ethical conduct of research and assume leadership roles in government, industry, and professional societies, demonstrating exemplary behavior in balancing stakeholder, client, and public interest as they pertain to geological investigations.
