ARSC 104 Contemporary Issues in Science - Cosmos, Earth and Humanity

This team-taught, interdisciplinary course builds scientific literacy by examining contemporary issues — current questions, discoveries and challenges at the intersection of science and society. Topics may include the Big Bang, evolution, genetics, human reproduction and health, vaccines, drugs, artificial intelligence, cryptography and cybersecurity. Students will learn to evaluate scientific claims and critically analyze how science is presented in the news, on television and on social media. Cross Listing: BIOL 104 and PHYS 104.
ARSC 105/CHEM 105 Contemporary Issues in Science - The Environment

This team-taught, interdisciplinary course is designed to build scientific literacy by examining contemporary issues in science - current questions, discoveries and challenges that shape our understanding of the environment. Topics may include climate change, energy systems, plastics and pollution, agriculture, water and food safety, biodiversity, environmental health and chemicals and drugs (including vaccines). Students will learn to evaluate scientific claims and critically analyze how science is presented in the news, on television and on social media. Cross Listing: CHEM 105/ARSC 105.
ARSC 201 Perspectives on Secondary Teaching

Study of adolescents in a variety of school and community settings; overview of issues in secondary education and discussions around qualities of effective teaching. Exploration of issues related to professionalism, state standards, classroom management and effective instruction. This experience is designed to help students evaluate their interest in a secondary education career and serves as the recommended introductory course for aggieTEACH-Arts & Sciences. It assists in assessing a student's aptitude, foundational knowledge and initial skills for pursuing secondary teaching certification.
