The Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology (ECCB) offers graduate programs leading to MS and PhD degrees in Ecology and Conservation Biology. The MS and PhD degrees train students for careers in research and management of terrestrial and aquatic ecological systems, as well as other fields linked to ecology and conservation biology. The MS offers a thesis and non-thesis option, allowing flexibility in both graduate education and preparation for a variety of career trajectories.

Fields of study are available in:

  1. Ecology: ecosystem science, biogeochemistry, physiological ecology, ecohydrology, global change ecology, community ecology, landscape ecology, ecological restoration;
  2. Conservation Biology: forest management, rangeland management, watershed management, natural resource economics and policy, conservation of biodiversity, human dimensions of ecosystem management;
  3. Genetics, Systematics, and Evolution: genetics, molecular biology, genomics, population genetics, tree improvement, plant systematics, and evolution;
  4. Spatial Sciences: geographic information systems, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and statistics.

Facilities within the department include modern teaching classrooms and laboratories. There are fifteen state-of-the-art research laboratories in the department, including the Biodiversity Teaching and Research Collection, the Stable Isotopes for Biosphere Sciences Laboratory, the Spatial Sciences Laboratory, and the S.M. Tracy Herbarium. Field sites and facilities are available throughout Texas and beyond. The ECCB faculty acquire external competitive research grants and contracts that provide funding for additional research avenues and graduate student support. A number of internal and external fellowships are also available to prospective students.

Graduate courses are designed to develop the academic skills of individuals and to advance their knowledge in professional fields related to Ecology and Conservation Biology. Departmental seminars facilitate graduate student development and serve to relate the most recent research findings applicable to the discipline.

The department welcomes applications from students with diverse educational backgrounds, experiences, and interests and specifically seeks applicants from underrepresented groups in ecology, conservation, and the sciences more broadly. Individually planned graduate programs assure a focused education that meets the needs of each candidate.
