The degree program emphasizes understanding Earth system processes and human-environment interactions through both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, preparing students to address complex environmental challenges using quantitative and systems-based approaches. Students focus coursework in one of five environmental themes: Biosphere, Climate Change, Environmental Modeling and Data Science, Hazards and Resilience, or Water System Science.

Two courses in the degree plan must be writing intensive courses designated by the Environmental Programs in the schedule of classes. The graduation requirements include three hours of international and cultural diversity courses and three hours of cultural discourse courses. A course satisfying a Core category, a college/department requirement, or a free elective can be used to satisfy this requirement. See academic advisor.
