The Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture offers three degrees at the master’s level: the Master of Science (MS) in Curriculum and Instruction, the Master of Education (MEd) in Curriculum and Instruction, and the Master of Education (MEd) in Learning Design and Technology.

Master of Education (MEd) in Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture offers the Master of Education (MEd) in Curriculum and Instruction (non-thesis) with 36 semester credit hours. There are two delivery options for students seeking the MEd degree: on-campus or online. 

The online MEd offers areas of emphasis in: (a) Generalist, (b) Literacy and Reading (with optional Reading Specialist certification), (c) STEM (with STEM Certificate), (d) Learning Design and Technology, (e) Urban Education, and (f) MEd with Teacher Certification (The Graduate Certification Program). 

The on-campus MEd offers areas of emphasis in: (a) Literacy and Reading, and (b) STEM (Mathematics Education and Science Education).

Master of Education (MEd) with Teacher Certification

This program is designed for individuals who are in their final year of undergraduate coursework or have completed the baccalaureate degree and desire Texas teaching certification. Candidates apply for the Master’s of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction and are admitted upon faculty committee review. Twenty-seven credit hours, an academic year of a teaching experience, and the successful completion of appropriate state examinations are required to qualify for certification. Coursework to meet state requirements for teaching certification may be applied toward the 36-hour M.Ed. degree. Certification is acquired through one of two pathways: (a) serve as a teacher of record (internship) at full district salary, or (b) serve as a substitute and clinical teacher.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture offers the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction in an on-campus delivery format. The program requires a minimum of 64 semester credit hours beyond the master’s degree. This program is offered to those with an interest in a career in research and/or academia. Those interested in the philosophical, theoretical and methodological constructs of both applied and basic quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. Specializations within this research-based curriculum are designed to encompass the original independent research interests of the individual. Areas of emphasis include: (a) Early Childhood Education, (b) Literacy and Reading Education, (c) STEM (Science Education; Learning Design, and Technology; Mathematics Education), (d) Teacher Education, and (e) Urban Education.

Doctor of Education (EdD) in Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture also offers an online Doctor of Education (EdD) in Curriculum and Instruction. This program is offered to those with an interest in advancing knowledge and skills for professional and leadership roles in education settings. The program requires a minimum of 64 semester credit hours beyond the master’s degree, all of which are presented through distance education technology. Students admitted to this program progress only as members of a cohort. Applicants to this program must have completed a master's degree and must have five years of classroom teaching experience.

Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program is once a year and may require an interview.

Fall Admission December 1

Admission to the Online Doctor of Education (EdD) degree program is once a year and requires a valid GRE score and an interview.

Spring Cohort Admission August 1
