Petroleum Engineering Program
Petroleum engineering is primarily concerned with the safe and economic extraction of oil, gas and other natural resources from the earth. This is accomplished through drilling, completions, and operation of wells while considering safety of personnel and the natural environment. The field of petroleum engineering also covers the management of subsurface reservoirs in which the resources are found.
Program Mission
The mission of the Petroleum Engineering Program at Texas A&M at Qatar is to create, preserve, integrate, transfer and apply petroleum engineering knowledge, and to produce capable future engineers and enhance the capabilities of current practitioners. The curriculum includes study of:
- Characterization and evaluation of subsurface geological formations and their resources.
- Application of reservoir engineering principles and practices for optimizing resource development and management.
- Procedures for drilling and completing wells and design and analysis of well systems.
- Design and analysis of systems for producing, injecting and handling fluids.
- Use of project economics, safety, and resource valuation methods for design and decision making under conditions of risk and uncertainty.
There is a heavy emphasis on mathematics, computer applications, communication skills, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. The department encourages students to work as interns during the summer months. A minimum of six weeks of approved internship experience is required for graduation.
Program Educational Objectives
The Program Educational Objectives of the Petroleum Engineering Program are to produce graduates who will be, within a few years of graduation:
- Effective engineers that continue to develop personally and professionally into prospective leaders; and,
- Successful in demonstrating their obligations to the profession and the wider society.
Before commencing course work in the major, students must be admitted to the major or have the approval of the department.
The undergraduate program in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M at Qatar is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.
